At times, what is done or said is not fully understood until later.

It will then 'pop' back into my mind and reviewed.

Such is the case today.

Today I went to a Vons store to purchase food.

At the check-out stand, both the credit card machine, and check out clerk, asked if I wanted to make a donation.

I went to the store to purchase food.

My donations are my business, alone.

To be asked by the 'machine' and again the check-out girl, if I wanted to make a donation, I find harassing.

If I cannot go to a 'food store' to purchase food - without being asked to make 'contributions' - I simply will not be able to shop at that store (or any other store of its name).

Please respond.

I will wait until a response is received before going into another Vons grocery store, again.

Thank you.

I can't donate and have been in a bad financial situation for a long time, just like many others have. Many can't really donate because at the end of the month they don't have any money.

Guest

They should not be allowed to do this. :x

Guest

The reason they solicit donations is so they can lump all your contributions and claim them on their income tax as a charitable contribution deduction....off of your money.

This charity hawking at the cash register wont stop until verbal spats turn real ugly at the register and make news. Vons and their higher ups wont' listen until then. Speak up America!

I have read alot of these post and I laugh at how everyone blames the checker. I am a checker and do you really think that we want to ask you to donate.

Get real our job is on the line. They keep track of how many donations we get on our checking number. I too am disgusted by the greed in the company. We have a new drive every month .

Hello they are writing your donation as a tax write off. Off course they are getting something in return.

I honestly dont know how this is legal. I think that 20/20 should investigate.

You guys are SO dramatic ! A company is just trying to raise money for a charity and in making good results, they require that each employee at least ASK.

If you guys don't want to donate, then just say and/or click no then you will be able to go about your day !

You guys can continue to be dramatic a chose not to shop somewhere because of this simple reason, but you will end up growing your own produce in your backyard because every company does it at one point in the year.

These tactic are not meant to be forceful, it is either a yes or no question that shouldn't kill the vibe of your whole day. Ridiculous.

It's not drama. It's called "being informed".

I've suspected for years that they comingle the donations with the corporations funds not only for claiming charitable deductions on tax returns, but also, think about the interest in the bank account at the end of just one day. Now, multiply it by 30 days out of a month.

I stopped donating years ago because it felt like a scam, and later to find out, it is! No drama, just informed.

Totally agree! Give with good heart or donโ€™t give nothing and just pay your groceries and give some cash to a homeless with mental illness etc!

I've always wanted to ask the checker what prostate cancer is and then try to get a complete explanation.

While visiting family out of state I was twice solicited by a *** in the parking lot of a Food Lion supermarket.

The woman had big ***,but also looked like she had a serious *** problem so I declined her offer of "full access" for $30

Vons is the worst when it comes to prices anyway,so my not shopping there any further was no real loss, however as I stated Stater Bros. has recently started this practice too.

they even make their checkers clap their hands like trained seals when they get a sucker to peel off a few greenbacks for their B.S. charity. Its all got to end.We are the consumers and if enough of us take our money elsewhere Stater Bros. and Vons will get the message. The question that needs to be asked is WHY are these supermarkets soliciting for these organizations?

Whats the angle? they must be getting something in return.

Guest

I swear I'm going to wind up taking a baseball bat to the next checker who asks me if I want to donate to some *** charity. To Vons, you *** have deep pockets,we dont,so if you *** feel so deeply for these screwball organization why dont you spread you wallets cheeks and blow some green.

Guest

I quit shopping at Vons for this very reason.

Its bad enough I have to fight my way past a parking lot full of *** and scammers begging for my hard earned money, but then to have a supermarket checker agressively push for a donation is going too far.

Why is Vons soliciting donations for any charity organization anyway? They are there to sell food and this practice is alienating many customers and driving them to shop elsewhere.

Recently Stater Bros. has started this B.S. too and I complained to the manager about.

This is bad bussiness and needs to stop.Supermarkets also need to drive the bums out of the parking lots too.

Guest

In reply to the Vons Checker 'me'. The checker I encountered thought they were doing good also and this one was quite aggressive in her solicitation with me.

Unfortunately, that not really the case with Pro-life anti-embryonic stem cell research people(Good is not being achieved, but Death, Death is being used as a solution once again).

We will at times be vocal with you. ....AT TIMES!

Just be aware that sensibilities are being violated, much like soliciting a Jew for donations for World Hunger by funding low cost Pork Farms and shipping the food worldwide.

I work for Vons. All of our donations go straight to the charities we are not able to pocket any of the funds.

If we did we would be fired. They have cameras on us at all times. I' m sorry that so many of you don't approve. We are asked by our company to do these things.

Trust me it's more work for us and is hard at times. We feel bad asking, but it's our job. We have to.

Plus it does go to a good cause and it does help out families who can't afford cancer treatments its not just for the research. :-(

Guest

Got harangued at Vons again! Checker asks me loudly and blatantly if I want to round up my total to the next dollar for 'Cancer'.

I told her it was against my religion and she blew me off didnt want to hear what I had to say anymore. Funny, I have to hear their loud rude harangues for charity when there are people in line in back of me, potentially adding social pressure and embarassment if I dont ante up. But when I have something to say about all this they dont want to hear it. I'm Catholic I dont give to charities unless I'm sure they dont fund bad things.....Embryonic Stem Cell Research!

They ALL fund Embryonic Stem Cell Research. All these cancer, womens breast cancer, childrens diseases, charity disease of the day are just funneling groups that divide the spoils amongst 5-10 or more other groups.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research is always funded in these. The people who sit on the boards of these groups, play musical chairs between the groups, they all fund and help each other out.

Again and throughout the year no time off given for my Dr. appointments.

Don't donate at VONS, just give directly to the charity. I suppose it's best for me not to request the time off and then maybe I will be scheduled off that day.

Cancer survivor.

Vons sucks. Got tired of the begging. Don't go anymore.

FOOD LIONS at Livingston, TN (38570) has been "SHAMELESSLY" SOLICITING DONATIONS at the Check-out Counter EVERY YEAR.

Why do those employees ask for money?

They are soliciting Money for themselves to buy food and eat later because Food Lion does not give them food.

For Poor and Needy Children? Where is the Evidence that they had ever donated?

Money donated all went Employee's Pockets.

Turn Then Away! Tell Them You Donate Personally - not being asked at the Grocery Store Checkout Counter!

Donation should be a Voluntary Conduct.

Not being asked to do it.

It's so annoying!

This should be Illegal!

Guest

It's not that hard to say "no" to a donation. It's not like they ask you why you can't donate.

Someone mentioned they look at you badly if you say no, get over it. But if it bothers you that much, just don't ship there..they can afford to lose a few thousand shoppers because it won't make a difference.
